British website launches slave register E-mail

LONDON (Reuters) - A British Web site that specializes in genealogy has a very extensive slave Wednesday registry opened. Thus, the half a million Britons of Caribbean origin, which is largely descended from slaves, their parents find out.


The data cover the period between 1812 and 1834. The web site contains details of more than 2.7 million slaves and 280,000 slavenhouders of seventeen former British colonies. The slaves are reflected in the name, birth date, sex and name of their owner. Slaves were often the surname of their boss.

Slave trade was banned in 1807: from that year had owners maintain records for offenses against to go. In 1833 followed the ban on slavery in British colonies.

Famous British ancestors of the islands is among top model Naomi Campbell (Jamaica) and Chelsea soccer player Shaun Wright-Phillips (Grenada).
