Reportage - Mela Utrecht E-mail
It would be the last Mela this year is in Utrecht. The weather was again, as the heatwave continued. I had never been one of Milan Mela. Perhaps that is wrong, even for only a half-Hindu.
It was rather late in the evening and we were just at a barbecue, but I convinced my parents that we still had to go look in the Zuiderpark in Utrecht.

We were clearly not the only ones. Wow, I never had so many Hindus tan seen together! Somewhere at the far end of the field we found a parking place when we arrived at half 10.

It was somewhat dark. We paid a small amount of 2 euros per person and could then continue. The atmosphere felt good, much better than Kwakoe. The people were much friendlier and happier.

The stalls at the Mela had a nice offer. Indian jewelry, moerti's (= religious images), low cd'tjes and of course lots of food. The toilets were clean but quite small in number.

In 10 hours we had the big stage. I know all those bands and not because it is so terribly long before those guys are 'hot' was played, I had the idea that it is a bit clumsy to be à la Kwakoe. I was wrong.
They (the Eagles, I believe) played very goed.Ook we got to hear the sound of a nice shy girl of 17, Rachelle. She sang beautifully, really pure. One was the mc and the crowd was zweept. Then came Jack with his husky voice. He gave a complete show. Delicious Chutney and bubbling. There appeared a guy in a Bob Marley outfit together with the whole Jack put on his head.

You would think that now everyone was dancing but that was against. In the piece where I stood, danced a few drunken indigenous medelanders. Near the stage, they had more meaning in.

By mid-12 was another singer named Anita. Today was the sound class. The transition of the party equally to this sweet love song by Anita was a little too big to overcome. Many people pulled off and I suddenly felt the fatigue in my legs.

We decided to go home. All in all it was worth and the Mela this summer in Amsterdam, we have even meepakken.
